Low back pain during pregnancy is quite common. In fact, between 50-75% of all pregnant women will experience low back pain. The pain is usually caused by rapid changes in weight, posture, gait, and hormones. Unfortunately, pregnancy-related low back pain occurs at a time when your medical treatment options are limited. Not surprisingly, over 90% of prenatal health care providers would recommend drug-free treatment.

Just recently (April 2021), the Clinical Obstetrics & Gynecology Journal published an article on chiropractic care and the pregnant body. In it they stated, "Chiropractic care is a commonly used treatment modality for musculoskeletal pain in pregnancy. Low back pain, pelvic pain, and other neuromuscular complaints are prevalent in pregnancy and contribute to significant maternal discomfort in many women. Nonpharmacologic therapies to relieve pain are increasingly important during pregnancy because of the opioid epidemic. Chiropractic treatment is one of the potential therapies that offers intervention without medications."

The goal of manual therapy & chiropractic is to restore normal joint mobility and reduce muscle tension. Manual therapy, including chiropractic manipulation, demonstrates medium to large benefit for the management of pregnancy-related low back pain.  Almost 75% of women undergoing chiropractic manipulation report significant pain reduction and clinically significant improvements in disability. Women who seek chiropractic care throughout pregnancy may have the added benefit of shorter labor times. Incidentally, postpartum LBP also responds to spinal manipulation- approximately 10 times greater than watchful waiting.
